From Chemicals to Cars - Is this the Ultimate in Unrelated Diversification?

What on earth is going on here? Chemicals giant Ineos has announced plans to invest hundreds of millions of pounds behind an attempt to become a car manufacturer.
Good old Igor Ansoff would love this move by Ineos.
Manufacturing is the connection between Ineos' existing (and substantial) business activities and their ambitious plan to design, develop and produce a new off-road replacement for the discontinued Landrover Defender.
Whether Ineos' manufacturing expertise and scale will be enough to enable it to succeed in car manufacturing remains to be seen!
