Fresh Finance Needed by Tesla to Launch a Mass Market Electric Car
15th August 2017
Tesla has launched its first mass-market electric vehicle - the Model 3. However, it now needs a substantial injection of finance to support the higher production capacity required.
As the infographic from Statista below illustrates, Tesla has been spending increasing amounts on capital spending as its business has grown. In 2017 alone it is expected to invest around $3.7bn.
To finance this it has issued a corporate bond - a form of debt finance - with the aim of raising $1.5bn.
Tesla claims it has over 500,000 orders for the Model 3, whose price starts at $35,000.
Initial production of the Model 3 started in July 2017, with a target of 400,000 to be made next year.
