Financial Methods of Motivation | Free Food and other Benefits from John Lewis Partnership

1st September 2022
A range of extra financial benefits are on the menu for John Lewis Partnership staff to help with the emerging cost of living crisis in winter 2022.
The Guardian reports here on how John Lewis is to offer free food to all its workers, including around 10,000 seasonal (temporary) staff, during the crucial Christmas trading period as a way to help with the rising cost of living.
Store employees, warehouse staff and employees at John Lewus head office will be able to get breakfast and lunch in staff canteens while those working outside the store environment, such as long-distance lorry drivers, will be able to order a free packed lunch.
With labour shortages impacting lots of businesses like John Lewis, and the need to recruit large numbers of temporary workers to meet seasonal peaks in demand, you can see how these extra financial benefits might appeal.
Of course, another way would be to increase the basic pay levels of employees!
The article suggests that John Lewis has traditonally offered competitive pay rates in the retail sector, but that this has recruitment advantage has eroded in recent years as rivals such as Aldi have increased minimum wage rates.
