Exam Boards for GSCE Business - All Change

Some interesting changes seem to be taking place in the “market” for GCSE Business courses…

Colleagues at centres around the UK are making their choices about which new GCSE Business specification to offer from September 2009. We’ve been tracking the choices made so far by centres, and the results so far point to quite a significant shift in exam board choices.

On a sample of 780 centres who have notified us of their choice of GCSE Business courses for Sept 2009, the market shares are approximately:

AQA - 36.3%
Edexcel - 42.8%
OCR - 15.8%
Others - 5.1%

Our sample is likely to be somewhat skewed towards centres that have traditionally offered AQA, as we’ve been developing resources for that board for several years.

However, there appears to be a significant move away from AQA to Edexcel amongst centres that have decided to continue with GCSE Business.

Another potentially significant change - the number of centres who have decided to abandon GCSE Business altogether. It is a broad estimate, but our numbers suggest that around 15-20% of centres registered with tutor2u have ditched GCSE Business in favour of offering BTEC First in Business from Sept 2009.
