Disposing of e-Waste

This is a great BBC News Clip on what happens to our electronic waste when we no longer need it. WASTE MANAGEMENT appears in many syllabuses nowadays and waste disposal is becoming a more regulated and expensive aspect of a business’s operations. This video clip shows what happens when the costs rise and businesses try to find cheaper ways to dispose of that waste. Here is another BBC clip from Panorama

There are many Waste Management companies now operating and any of their websites will illustrate the scope of ‘specialist waste’ there is nowadays all of which needs specialised disposal – batteries (each type requiring different treatment), fluorescent tubes, cooking oil etc. Businesses are responsible for sorting their waste before sending it to landfill. This inevitably leads to higher costs and a slowdown in operations. This entry on the BBC website shows what is required to recycle e-Waste and illustrates why it is such an expensive process. It also shows why it is so difficult to stop the export of waste to developing countries
We have good links with the company that takes our rubbish away from school. They were more than happy to allow a group of pupils to have a tour round the local recycling and sorting plant.
