Diagrams

I am just about to have one of my final diagram quizes with my U6th IB class. With only a matter of days until the exam it is vital that students know and understand the importance of diagrams.

All three of the papers at higher level (and the two at standard level) will require students to use diagrams.

Make sure that:

1. Diagrams are drawn accurately i.e. make sure that the MC curve cuts the AC curve at the lowest point.

2. Make sure your diagrams are clear and big enough for the examiner to interpret clearly. Diagrams give you valuable analysis marks make sure the examiner can reward you for them.

3. Label the axis to reflect the material in the question i.e. if a data response question is about the market for coffee and you are asked to draw a supply and demand diagram label the axis price of coffee and quantity of coffee.

4. Explain your diagram. There are a large number of students who draw a diagram as part of their answer but then don’t explain what is happening in the diagram i.e. if the question is asking you to show a shift in AD makes statements such as; AD shifts right (AD1 to AD2), demand pull inflation is experienced in the economy (P1 to P2), the economy moves to output level Y2 closer to full employment (YFE).

5. Use a ruler and pencil. Take pride in your work and make sure it is clear.

Keep drawing them until you are sick to death of them. Only a few days to go and you will be suitably rewarded next week.
