Developing Exam Skills - BUSS3

8th November 2011

One of the key areas of BUSS3 is the final question, one which many, many students struggle to get to grips with. The key to this question is getting students to build logical arguments from the data within the case study. In my opinion, the sooner the students start analysing data and using it to build arguments, the better.

With this in mind, I did this activity with my Year 12’s to develop this skill and it worked really, really well….

After a brief introduction to market analysis, I gave them the case study from the January 2009 BUSS3 tutor2u revision workshop. The case study was on a fictional sports business called Target Sports. The business consisted of a number of leisure clubs as well as sports retail stores.

In the case study, the original owner of the business, Stan Todd, enquired about purchasing the fitness division from target sports. The students were then given some marketing data on the fitness industry. In the conference, we got the students to pick out two pieces of data that supported Stan Todds decision to purchase the fitness stores and two pieces of evidence against his decision.

I did this today with my students. Gave them the case study, then the marketing data and they went to work on their mini whiteboards. Got right into it they did. It was like a mini conference.

I then developed their evaluation skills by asking them what extra information would have been useful as well as asking them to criticise the data they had been presented with. Worked an absolute treat it did.

The real beauty of this activity was that all the resources were lifted directly from the tutor2u BUSS3 conference. I didnt need to do a thing (well, a bit of photocopying).

A ready made lesson on market analysis complete with all the resources including the case study, the marketing data and the answers. All of which can be found below.

The tutor2u BUSS3 student workshops are so popular and effective - and you can see why from this Target Sports exercise. Each sitting, the tutor2u team come up with a series of brand new exam-style exercises to use with students and teachers at the workshops. I’m sure November / December 2011 will be just as good, and I’m looking forward to presenting at several of the workshops.

You can make provisional bookings now for your students using this online form:
