Cutting costs for a railway by switching the engines off

This short video piece on the BBC website is a great example to use when explaining how innovation can help a business cut operating costs…

The video explains how train operator Trans-Pennine Express has found an ingenious way to cut operating costs. Computer-controlled diesel engines linked to advanced use of sat-nav technology tells the train where and when it is safe to cut the engine. In effect, the train might be free-wheeling downhill, with the engines cutting in to provide the power needed to move along the flat or uphill parts of the track.

It is claimed that the innovation can help the business save around 10% of its fuel bill.

I look forward to seeing if I can spot the change in engine noise when I’m next on the train from Garforth to Manchester.
