Challenge the Chancellor 2010

The Chartered Institute of Taxation is partnering with tutor2u to run their excellent Challenge the Chancellor competition for 2010. Details can be found here about the 2010 competition, which is open to all UK students taking a Level 2 course (e.g. GCSE, BTEC First) or Level 2 course (e.g. GCE, Applied GCE, BTEC, IB, OCR Nationals) in Business, Economics or Politics.
Competition timing & teams
- Challenge the Chancellor 2010 will run from December 2009 until 31 March 2010. The final closing date for entries will be MIDNIGHT on Wednesday 31 March 2010.
- Entries will be submitted using a online submission form for each team.
- A school may enter as many teams as it wishes; individual students can only enter as part of one team
- The competition is open to students taking any subject
- Students must work in teams of either three or four members
- A student may only enter as a member of one team
- Each team must be supervised by a member of the teaching staff, who will be the point of contact with tutor2u and the IoT. Teachers may supervise more than one team.
The Purpose of Challenge the Chancellor 2010
The two main objectives of the competition are to raise commercial awareness in schools, particularly in relation to taxation policy, and to increase understanding of the possibilities of a career in taxation.
So what’s the incentive? Besides learning about tax policy and how wages are taxed , there are some great prizes on offer:
Prizes
Level 3 (i.e. A2/AS/Applied Business/IB) Competition:
- £1,000 for the winning team - school prize to be spent in the department (provided by The Chartered Institute of Taxation).
- Individual Team member prizes: £100 for each winning team member and £50 for the runners-up team members.
The winning entry will be chosen from the top five shortlisted entries.
Level 2 (i.e. GCSE / Applied GCSE, BTEC) Competition:
- £300 for the winning team – school prize to be spent in the department (kindly provided by BDO Stoy Hayward, Competition sponsor)
- Individual Team member prizes: £75 for each winning team member and £50 for the runners-up team members).
Winners and runners up in both competitions will be invited to a prize-giving lunch in London following the 2010 Spring Budget. For previous competitions a member of H M Government has presented the prizes. Travel expenses from within the UK will be covered for team members and up to two teachers per team.’
How to Enter

Details on how to enter, competition guidance and rules, and examples of winning entries in previous Challenge the Chancellor Competitions will appear on tutor2u. An online submission system will be used, via the tutor2u website. Once a team entry has been submitted, it cannot subsequently be changed - so please only submit final entries.
