A terrific article on Dyson in The Guardian today which is pure gold dust for AQA BUSS4 students preparing for the Section A essays on the recent recession in the UK…

Here is the link to the article.

Many students will know that Dyson offshored its production activities several years ago, leaving the design & marketing functions in the UK. A steady stream of successful innovations have driven Dyson’s impressive performance in the last year or two.

Some great data in the article which AQA BUSS4 students could use in their essays:

Operating profits doubled to £190m in 2009
Sales increased by 23% to £770m (from £626m)
Operating profit margin in 2009 was, therefore, 24.7% ((uo from around 15% in 2008)

I like this quote which goes to heart of Dyson’s success despite the global economic downturn:

“Our success is down to new ideas and the work of teams around the world,” he said. “It demonstrates that Britain can compete in hi-tech exports if it invests in long-term research and development. People want technology that works well, even in a recession.”
