Business Strategy & Sony - Where is Kazou Hirai Taking the Firm?

Followers of the Business Blog and attendees at our BUSS4 revision workshops will know that we're big fans of Sony as a case study in business strategy. And this resource - an interview by BusinessWeek with Sony's CEO Kazou Hirai - provides another useful addition to the research resources which students ought to use if they want to develop their understanding of the strategic challenges facing Sony and the options Hirai is choosing.

One approach might be to give the students a printout of the (relatively short) interview and ask them to report back on these two questions:

(1) How does Kazou Hirai plan to improve the profitability of Sony's loss-making television division? How would you classify this strategy?

(2) What does Hirai have to say about the culture at Sony and how he wants to change it?

Students could also follow some of the other links about Sony featured below to get more background information on the strategic position of Sony.
