Botox Tax

Jim Riley

29th July 2009

I have just read on the front of The Telegraph that American’s wishing to have cosmetic surgery could be hit with a tax to help part fund Obama’s $1trillion reform of the US health system.

Senators are considering levying a 10% tax on procedures such as breast enhancement, teeth whitening and tummy tucks. The tax is targeted at the wealthy and would target “unnecessary procedures” not covered by health insurance. Americans spend £6.3bn on cosmetic procedures each year and thus could be a good source of tax revenue for Obama.

Critics have labeled it a “Botox tax” and say it disproportionately affects women, who account for 86% of all cosmetic surgery patients.
