Being Entrepreneurial - SCAMPER Monster Mart

11th September 2013

SCAMPER Monster Mart is an activity that introduces the lateral thinking acronym SCAMPER and invites learners to use the technique to suggest solutions to the problem posed by the a case study. The Monster Mart case study describes a business that sells bespoke toy monsters online.

Learners are introduced to the acronym SCAMPER - a creative thinking method that can help to identify opportunities. The techniques suggests ways for entrepreneurs to overcome problems that might occur:

1.Substitute – what part of the process can be swapped to make it more effective? For example, can I use plastic to make my product instead of wood?

2.Combine – can any elements of your activity be combined to save time or reduce costs? For example, can the member of staff who serves soft drinks also serve crisps and other snack?

3.Adapt – is there any part of the activity that can (legally) copy from someone else? For example, could our business copy the returns policy of a high street retailer?

4.Magnify – is there any part of the activity that could be emphasized? For example, if recycled packaging is used, could a re-cycle sign be more prominent on the packaging?

5.Put to other use – can products or services be put to other uses? For example, could a business card producer also make and sell leaflets?

6.Eliminate – what part of an activity can be removed to make it more effective. For example, could a business remove telephone sales and only sell their product online?

7.Re-arrange – what part of the activity can be put in an alternative position or re-ordered? For example, if orders for the product are taken before they are made, will this reduce the number of unsold products?
