Avoiding the risks that lead to shattered lives

25th March 2008

I was in the tutor2u food manufacturing division (my kitchen) stirring some delicious home-made bacon broth when a piece on tonight’s Five Live news caught my attention. It featured a representative from the Health & Safety executive discussing new legal requirements for business owners and led onto a discussion about how complying with health and safety legislation actually generates a good return on investment for a business.

As a small business owner, I’m not convinved that I have too much to worry about in the health & safety department (apart from the sanity of my team after prolonged exposure to poor puns).

However, I was interested enough in the radio debate to explore the HSE website in a little more detail - and the visit was well worth it.

I was taken by some of the statistics on the incidence and costs of workplace accidents in the UK, as featured in the “Shattered Lives” campaign launched by the HSE last month.

There is one particularly good, interactive bit of the site, where students can research some mini case studies on industrial accidents. Here is the link.
