AS Business Studies ‘Eggheads’ Revision/AFL Task
2nd May 2012
Many thanks to Gareth Allum and his students at The Cooper School, Bicester for letting us know about an innovative revision activity that has provided both enjoyable and effective. Gareth has kindly provided some supporting notes and downloads that explain and illustrate the “eggheads”-style revision approach.
During this busy revision period the AS Business Studies class at The Cooper School were tasked with completing an ‘Eggheads’ styled revision activity. This activity works brilliantly at KS5 as it acts as both a fun revision activity and also as a student created assessment for learning (AFL) task. I have used the activity with my AQA AS Business class for unit F291 but the concept can be used across any exam board or unit.
Within the class each student is given a topic area to focus upon such as Business Ownership or Sources of Finance. They then have to create a question upon their individual topic and then provide the correct answer with two incorrect ‘fooling’ answers. There needs to be at least three questions for the game to work but I found it far more benefical for the students to produce 6-8 questions and answer cards.
This task works extremely well as the students are engaged in a revision activity which helped them review a specific area, but also offers the teacher a quick AFL task to assess what knowledge the students have retained through the answers provided to the questions that they have created. To take this a step further, each student can complete a checklist of subject areas revised and can be allocated one of their weaker topics when constructing the ‘Eggheads’ game.
Please feel free to look at round one of the student created question cards and class presentation.
