AQA A Level Business: Holistic Teaching Schedules for AS and A2

Jim Riley

30th August 2013

The end of January modules gives us as teachers an opportunity to teach many topics within the AS and A2 specs in a holistic manner.

When teaching AS and A2, I give students the outline and order of topics in their first lesson in September. A great deal of time is spent explaining the order and emphasising the importance of them keeping up to date with all that is covered. Not teaching to a January module deadline is a good thing it also gives me the opportunity to extend topics or put a hold on something that is difficult or students don't get (and maybe restart it in the next term).

My thought process behind creating schedules is to empower students, give them structure for the year but one that isn't too fixed. It allows me to whizz through the easier topics and test everybody on a regular basis to highlight concerns or weaknesses.

It is easy to turn the schedules into schemes of work because one can divide topics into weeks and terms and you can even share sections between teachers. I teach much of AS and A2 in whole topics, so for instance I teach all the finance together usually in the second half of the winter term. It works and I can introduce a variety of exam questions/papers throughout the year.

I hope you find them useful and I look forward to your feedback. I know in the past my students have come to appreciate them.
