Applying for a Franchise

6th October 2011

Writing a good assignment or homework is not an easy task. Text books rarely offer anything that is challenging or interesting enough. I am extremely grateful to Jon Mace’s recent blog on Jaguar Land Rover which I used as homework for my Year 12 pupils. The articles were great and all the pupils produced some of their best work so far. I have been teaching Franchising recently and in an attempt to avoid a standard discussion of the advantages and disadvantages to the Franchisee and Franchisor (yawn!) I came up with the attached assignment.

When using case studies either in class or in preparation for exams I always try to get the pupils to think as if they actually work for the organisation. I wanted to do the same in this task. By making the pupils apply for a Franchise I wanted them to think like an entrepreneur. They also have to think about what the franchisor might be looking for. By justifying themselves in their application they will be learning the important skill of analysis. I am hoping that this task will draw out all of the important features of Franchising using a real world context and real world examples. The McDonalds and Subway websites I have suggested are excellent and give a good insight into franchising.

I will tweet next week how successful a task it is.
