A2 Business: Six key global trends that are shaping business strategy

Jim Riley

15th June 2011

Students who can point to some overriding trends which help shape strategic direction and choices are much more likely to write interesting, persuasive and evaluative essays. This new report by consultants Ernst & Young is a pinch of gold dust for such students, as it examines in a reasonably accessible way six broad, long-term developments which shape business around the globe.

Here is a link to the Ernst & Young report.

In summary, the six trends are:

(1) Emerging markets increase their global power
(2) Cleantech becomes a competitive advantage
(3) Global banking seeks recovery through transformation
(4) Governments enhance ties with the private sector
(5) Rapid technology innovation creates a smart, mobile world
(6) Demographic shifts transform the global workforce

If I was an AQA BUSS4 student looking to use the report for some last-minute revision for the Section B essay, I would be focusing on items (1), (5) and (6) to pick up some research evidence and arguments. But well worth a longer read for teachers preparing their A2 strategy lessons and resources for next year too.
