A picture is worth a thousand words

As part of preparation for a recent Estyn inspection, I used this approach to develop some extra resources which encouraged students to use their lieracy skills. This followed on from a recent school-based CPD on Tactical Teaching. It seemed to work well.

The students were given an image eg. a Findus beef lasagne. They were then asked to write a story around the image using as many Business Studies terms/ideas as possible. As in all my lessons, the use of connectives was was also encouraged.

Differentiation was achieved by giving some students varying numbers of key terms such as stakeholders, profitability, ethics etc. At the end of the activity, students were able to self-assess their work against a number of criteria and then pass on to another member of the class for some peer assessment. This generated targets for improvement for the next piece of work the students had to do.

The first few of these I did worked reasonably well, and once the students got the idea of the process it became very competitive. Using something called 66 words from Tactical Teaching, I will be aiming to reduce the possible word count in follow-up versions of this.

Makes great materials for wall displays as well!!
