A Great Example of Market Share in Action

The new report from the Competition Commission on grocery retailing provides a wealth of useful information and ideas for business teachers. One aspect to focus on is market share.

Just before Christmas, the Guardian put together a really useful graphic on the geographical market shares of leading grocery retailers in the UK.

The recommendations of the Competition Commission will perhaps slowly change the colours of this market share map - but not by much. Tesco now has a market share more than twice the size of its next largest competitors, and is the dominant retailer in many large towns and cities.

Harrogate is an interesting battleground for grocery retailers. For a while, Tesco had no presence there at all - and Harrogate was the only postcode area in England without a Tesco. Then Tesco opened a small Tesco Express convenience store outlet in a garage on the Knaresborough Road, increasing its market share to a stunning 1%! Watch this space as the competitors look to hang on to their lead in the affluent North Yorkshire town…
