Fighting for Our Subject: Improving Uptake for GCSE Geography

Joanne Parkinson

21st December 2014

With competition between subjects increasing in school, it's important to show our students how important, realistic and current a Geography qualification is.

In my department we go all out to ensure that we have a healthy number of pupils opting for GCSE Geography.

Whilst many pupils love the subject and have enjoyed their learning experience at key stage 3, many need reminding about the "wow" aspect of Geography. I have included below a range of videos and resources which we use in a variety of ways.

We will often have the videos playing as a class comes in to their lesson as well as having a loop of images playing in our break out area that pupils can look at when walking through the department.

I also use "scoop-it" and upload the videos which I then link to my school Twitter account which many pupils and parents follow. There's plenty more videos and information posters out there, but I find some quite boring and I know these work and get the pupils talking.
